History

Since inception, Merz Therapeutics has implemented a number of launches and has grown to be a successful affiliate of Merz globally.

While much has changed since Friedrich Merz first set up his business in 1908, we remain family-owned and still align to his aspiration that ‘We do it differently and we do it better!’

The Merz story begins in 1908, when the 24-year old entrepreneurial pharmacist and chemist Fredrich Merz establishes his own pharmaceuticals production plant in Frankfurt.
1908
As his business begins to grow, he expands with the acquisition of an old cigarette factory at 100 Eckenheimer Landstrasse, Frankfurt. This site is still the base of the Merz HQ today.
1909
Merz becomes increasingly aware of the issues faced by his countrymen who are raising large families and living in poverty. He realises that effective birth control could help improve lives. Despite fierce opposition from the German Empire and the Catholic Church, he launches a topical contraceptive.
1911
Merz moves his manufacturing machinery out of the old cigarette factory – a move that will later result in saving the company from the devastation of WWII.
1939
The old cigarette factory is hit in a bomb raid and is razed to the ground.
1944
Merz starts to focus on aesthetics and specifically anti-ageing cream and consumer care products including hair, skin and nails dietary supplements.
1950
Merz invests further into researching and developing aesthetic treatments and medicines for the central nervous system, including considerable focus on Alzheimer’s disease and dystonia.
1960s 1970s
The company continues to expand and become one of the world’s leading producers of a number of successful treatments, including anti-dementia treatment. Next, Merz’s pharmaceutical expertise moves into the area of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT/A), marking a major area of strategic focus and growth.
2002
The Merz brand expands even further, with an office opening in Elstree in the UK, as well as affiliates in France, Spain, Italy, BeNeLux and Canada.
2006
Merz celebrates its 100th anniversary as it launches its own first prescription medicine in the UK.
2008
Merz UK continues to grow rapidly and launches its first prescription medicine in aesthetics.
2010
The new corporate strategy is set and the clear focus on aesthetics and neurotoxins leads to some rapid developments and acquisitions.
2012
A series of product launches and indications in both the UK and Ireland further accelerates the growth of the business in its core areas of aesthetics and neurotoxins.
2013 2017
The 110th anniversary sees Merz grow stronger and with an ever-wider global footprint, but the company remains a wholly privately owned, family business.
2018
UK affiliate moves to new offices at Breakspear Park, Hemel Hempstead.
